Happy New Years

It's been a pretty great year for me. I learned a lot (mostly about coding and how big an ass it is). I met people and made friends. I got a lot more books. I got a new bookshelf and rearranged my books too many times. I got back to watching The Royals.
Wasn't a good idea.
I hope everyone enjoys their New Years!
It's New Years Eve, I don't know why I'm posting this.
Just go with it.

CoHo Binge Wrap-Up

The month of December was "dedicated" to reading CoHo books. I had a lot of fun reading her books and seeing her writing style evolve thoughout her books. CoHo's earlier works are very different to her later works. I thought Hopeless was disappointing. I really didn't like it. The relationship happened really fast and it felt juvenile. I never finished Maybe Someday because I just didn't like the first pages. I know, bad description. It was a bout how a girl was in a long-term, terrible relationship, but for some reason, she falls in love with a life-changing guy.
I really liked Slammed. I thought the supporting characters were outstanding. They created such a nice atmosphere. It was very welcoming and loving. It gives you all sorts of feels. I was very emotional.
If you're looking for a dark, mysterious romance, without alpha males, Never Never is great. It's dark, mysterious, captivating, alluring and the dual-writing-partnership-thing was seamless. It's hard to tell that two authors wrote the books together. However, I recommend you marathon the series, once they're ALL out. The cliff-hangers will drive you crazy.
If you never read a CoHo book, but plan to, I recommend you read the books in this order.
  1. Slammed: a really light intro to CoHo
  2. Hopeless/Maybe Someday: not my favorite books, but definitely give them a try.
  3. Never Never: a bit dark, but super enjoyable
  4. Ugly Love: it's steamy and slightly dark. (I'm trying to go from dark to light)
  5. November 9: a cute relationship that's unrealistic.
  6. Confess: the holy grail.

OMG THIS BOOK!

The Birth of My Labyrinth Obsession

I was going to write a post about the movies I watched, but I doubt Wild or The Purge: Anarchy are of significance compared to Labyrinth.
I really should have not watched this movie because I can't stop thinking about it. It's been a really bad obsession. There's a song in the movie call Dance Magic and I sing it EVERYDAY. I had to train my friend to respond with the correct lyrics. My fixation with the movie did not stop there. I ended up changing my lock screen to this photo:
Dammit David Bowie/Jareth the Gobling King. Why you do this?!

Two Book Reviews: Strings of DNF

The First Book

The Chicken Chronicles: How Chickens Ruined My Reputation
Author: Jennifer Mervine
Never before has the dark and twisted psychosis of the backyard chicken been revealed...until now.
Forget everything you think you know about chickens. You only know part of the truth. No one speaks of their sexual deviance and dark unknowable rituals. Flock keepers have remained silent on chicken's potential to disrupt familial harmony through sleep deprivation, needy behavior, binge eating and random acts of violence.
This tale is the recollection of one woman's desperate struggle to hold on to her family, her friends, and her very sanity after she stumbled into the trap of urban chicken keeping.
The author contacted me to review this book. Her presentation of this book was really funny. I got a grasp of her humor and I had a desire to read this book. When I started this book, I thought it was a bit of a mish-mosh. The thoughts were scattered and everywhere. I imagined this person using a lot of hand gestures speaking loudly and quickly. This person is also ranting and going on a tangent. That's pretty much the description of the writing. I couldn't relate to the book. It talked about taxes, wages being cut, etc. I'm fourteen-I know this is shocking because I act incredibly childish for my age. I'm still in school and I don't know what adults have to go through. I don't focus on politics because Donald Trump is everywhere. Since I couldn't relate to this book, I became disinterested. This book has been added to my long list of DNFs.

Second Book

Soul Mate (Immortal Love #1) by Anna Santos
Annabel is a bad-ass hybrid hunter, seeking revenge from the vampire who killed her parents and put her brother in a coma. Arriving in a new town with an undercover identity to protect and the mission to find a pureblood vampire to save her brother’s life, the last thing Annabel needs is to fall in love with the sexy, persistent werewolf who thinks she’s a helpless human in need of a knight in shining armor.
Shane is a dominant werewolf who also happens to be the local sheriff. He has almost lost hope of finding his better half. So when his beautiful soul-mate shows up and rogue vampires try to kill her, he does what any smart wolf would do: he saves her and takes her home, hoping to convince her that they belong together.
When sparks fly between them, Annabel has to decide if she tells him who she really is or runs the other way to protect her secrets.
I couldn't find a picture on google without a promo on the cover.....
Anyway, I was contacted to review this book too. You can see that review requests is one of the motifs of this post.
I was REALLY excited for this book because the author said, "0 stupid alpha males and leading girls." I literally squealed. I started crying because someone made the impossible possible. But, some things are too good to be true. EVERYTHING DISAPPOINTS ME.
The first scene takes place at a bar. No judgement there, unless you're a thirty/forty-something-year-old man drinking vodka with cranberry juice through a straw.
You think that's bad? Well let me weave a little story for you, dearie. By story, I mean summarizing what I read, which was really little.

A man who has lived multiple human lives (I think, I don't remember shit because I was honestly physically repulsed) is at a bar. This bar is full of vampires and shifters, WHOOOHOOO! Then, THE GIRL walks in. The man is utterly transfixed and decides to imprint her. #twilight-reference. He promises himself that he'll make her panties drop, she'll be his and only his, and to get in her leather suit. Whonderfewl... The man isn't the only one feeling attraction. Did I forget to mention that both characters are Mary Sue/Gary Stu.
Yeah...Gary Stu/Mary Sue and Insta-Love/Insta-Lust are the ban of my existence. What do you know! They both make an appearance. The moral compass' of these characters need a lot of fine tuning. If a girl leaves a bar, you do not follow her out, even if there are vampires that want to kill her. If the girl faints, you do not bring her to your house. You attraction is distracting you from doing your job. If you wake up in this random person's house, without your clothes on and don't remember a thing about last night, get your fucking ass out of there. Do not stay for breakfast. It was so unrealistic. If you're including romance, take the time to develop it and have a good, plausible background/foundation.

About the Author
Cameron Jace is the bestselling author of the Grimm Diaries and Insanity series. A graduate of the college of Architecture, collector of out-of-print books, he is obsessed with the origins of folk tales and the mysterious storytellers who spread them. Three of his books made Amazon's Top 100 Customer Favorites in Kindle 2013 & Amazon's Top 100 kindle list. Cameron lives in California with his girlfriend. When he isn't writing or collecting books, he is playing music.

1. When I read this book, I learned A LOT about Alice in Wonderland and Lewis Carroll. You obviously did a lot of research. Where did you find all of this information?

Well, I have been a fan since long, and like in the Grimm Diaries I have always been interested in the authors who wrote long lasting books. But when I started to right the searches the research was hectic. I started with book on Lewis Carroll, interpretations, both mine and others, then I began asking British people who lives in Oxford and London. Those, by far, gave the meat of what I was looking for.

2. How did this book come to be? What inspired you to start the book?

I hadn't planned to become a retelling/folklore storyteller when I first started. But after the success of the Grimm Diaries I thought I'd give it a try. I had an idea for the Wizard of Oz, but I wasn't passionate about it. Then I read an article one day, a blog actually, about a teacher saying her students told her "this Carroll guy must have been on drugs when he wrote this." It's a funny article, and I agreed to Carroll's beautiful madness, so I thought to start a series where he is in asylum, but thought Alice in a  asylum is much better.

3. Your characters are so complex and intriguing. (I know this is more of a statement than a question.) They all had interesting back stories. Did you have trouble building their past?
Usually, character building takes time, but in Carroll's story I always seem to see through easily. I mean the Pillar is definitely out of his mind, always guiding Alice in gibberish and coded words, without giving away his own past. That's enough for a character study for me:)

4. Was there anything that was difficult to write?

This series is the most difficult I wrote. It's tight. Fast paced. Informative, and entangled in long and short-arch plot, so it's not easy. But I love it so much.

5. What part was your favorite to write?

Frankly, I love the Pillar and Fabiola. Alice, too, but not as much. Lol. I write the Queen, Duchess, and the Cheshire in a very objective way. But what I love even more than all of this are the Wonderland Monsters in the beginning of every book, let alone the commentary on how mad our real world is.

6. What are you currently working on right now?

A thriller. It's been taking a long time, but for a fantasy story, the shift isn't easy. But I've always wanted to write adults thrillers.

7. Would you want your book to become a movie adaptation? If so, who would be in your dream cast? (I want Johnny Depp because he was in the Alice in Wonderland movie and he's a great actor.)

Of course! Hmmm... The best Alice I was told was Emma Watson. I don't why, since I am not really a Potter fan. The Pillar would be someone like James Spader, but then I discovered he has a similar role, if not as crazy, in the Blacklist TV series. You'd be surprised if I told I am imagining Michael Fassbender, given we can make him look a bit older.

For New Bloggers and Redesigners

As you can tell, I recently did a makeover on my blog. After this makeover, my blog looks somewhat decent and I let that get to my head, so I will proceed to act like a know it all and tell you some things. I'll start from the top to the bottom of my blog.

Scream Queens

I was really excited for this show because
A) This show comes from the minds of Glee AND American Horror Story. These are some of my favorite television shows.
B) It's horror. I don't know why, but I've been obsessed with horror lately.
C) The cast! JAMIE LEE CURTIS! Her mother was in Psycho, PSYCHO!!!!!

The Struggle is Real

I'm sure we all obsess over our blog set up. I go around and EVERYBODY has an awesome aesthetic and I'm literally a potato. I recently discovered Angie Makes and I am literally crying tears of joy. She has AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL graphics FOR FREE! It is so easy to use too! Her pinterest page also has a bunch of freebies. I'll link the sites I used below.

The Elements/Graphics I used

I downloaded a bunch of the elements and I stored them in Dropbox. It'll save your computer.

How to Make Book Lovers Happy

Is it just me, or do book lovers get some hate? My parents tell me I buy too many books and spend too much money on it. I'm teased (gently) by other kids for reading too much and enjoying books. That makes me kind of sad, and I think other book lovers can relate. So, here's what you should do to make them happy.

The Natural Order

The Natural Order
Author: R.J. Vickers
Publish Date: June 1, 2015
Tristan Fairholm is one of 15 juvenile delinquents selected to learn magic-for a purpose that is kept secret from them. When they at last learn that the magic they have harvested causes death and ruin in a bid to keep the world from collapse, they must make a choice: do they fight it? Or do they use it?

Book to Movie/Other Adaptations

Many books have become adaptations. My favorites are Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote starring Audrey Hepburn (I haven't read it yet), Pride and Prejudice (2005) by Jane Austen (currently reading it), anything by Nicholas Sparks and a lot more.
But, not all adaptations are great/successful. In my opinion, almost all adaptations are pretty crappy (the ones today.)

Book Review

The Night Circus
Author: Erin Morgenstern
Publish Date: September 13, 2011
Publisher: Doubleday
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Reves and it is only open at night.
But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway-a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love-a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.
True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

Hardcover or Softcover: Pros & Cons

This choice irks and frustrates me. There are so many pros and cons for these two. I'm writing this post mainly because I'm currently reading The Night Circus and I'm loving it. I really want to purchase a copy, but not sure which format to get. Hardcover or Softcover? Wow, pretty stupid question and post because a book is supposed to be about its story. #vanity

DNF: JLA Book Review (My Best Review)

This is quite shocking to me.
I can't believe that there's a JLA book that I don't like.
What book is it?!?!?!
It's...

Blog Makeover

I've been trying to redesign my set-up. I really want it to be a simple black and white, but my current background in black and white isn't the best. I'm thinking about going back to the "black and white forest" background. I'm really not sure  if it'll look good.

Also, what are your opinions on this blog button?
I'm not sure if I remember how to upload this.
I'll keep my old button too.
If you do want the instructions, click read more.

The Dark Elements Marathon Wrap-Up

I've been meaning to get start the series, but I was really hesitant. If you read JLA books, you're kind of basically reading the same thing over and over again. You're always reading about a girl who is surrounded by one, or multiple, swoon-worthy guys. Then, the girl becomes a special snowflake...shit starts going down...
The writing is great. The author adds humor. She [JLA/Jennifer L. Armentrout] adds pop culture references. She is literally fusing herself into a book. Her books are a reflection of herself, excluding the supernatural/paranormal elements, obviously. Her action scenes makes you devour the book. I got so excited that, I think, my mouth began to foam.
Unfortunately, everything is really predictable because it's basically an up-cycled plot. I still love her nonetheless. She is definitely one of my favorite authors and I really want to meet her.
The series revolves around Layla. Layla is an "abomination" because she is the offspring of two rivaling/different races-demons and gargoyles. Growing up Layla felt like an outcast and was treated pretty much like shit by the gargoyle race the raised her. But, her adoptive brother was always kind to her. This obviously causes Layla to develop feelings for him. She grows up and has cool powers. She can see your soul, tag demons, and go virtually undetected by them. Then, upper-level demon, crazy hot, omg he is perfection, please have my babies Roth crosses her path. That's when shit really hits the fan.
From that point on the story is about Layla learning about herself-coming to terms with her "heritage" and her powers, along with picking a boyfriend. Amidst the boy drama, there are things trying to kill Layla because of her awesome powers and abilities.
There's a lot of drama, action and romance. I always enjoy her writing and stories, but I gave most of the books 3-stars. I'm glad that the ending isn't completely HEA. It was bittersweet and now I'm copying what I said on my goodreads reviews.
But seriously, this series is awesome. I'm really sad that it ended. It's probably one of the few trilogies that I like/liked.
It's only fitting to use this song.
